Well, I've read all the threads regarding this and they don't fit mine. I have only one( 1) V-notch on the pulley ring closest to the engine at TDC. There is NO dimple on the other side. I static timed it to that notch and it ran lousy, flat spotted, no power, etc. I than hook up a timing light and while the engine was running turned it so the notch went passed the case center to the left.. advanced? It runs better now but Im only guessing that I have it timed right. How do I know for sure?

Also: Now that I have it running OK I ad  just the carb but it does not want to stay at the 850 RPM all the time. It seems to most of the time but sometimes it will just run faster like when I stop at a light it sounds like the RPMs run up? I checked for vacuum leak NONE I did a complete tune up and clean the idle jet, checked the electro jet. Maybe choke?

Thanks, Oldndragon :?:

What kind of distributor are you running? Does it have 1 or 2 vacuum lines to it, or none at all?

It runs a stock distributer one vacuum line. I timed it with this vacuum line sconnected.
The RPMs run up an down when Im trying to time it....

I assume that this is your distributor, but you need to check the number embossed on the side.... from www.oldvolkshome.com

I found this #: 0231170036 VW on the side of the distributor. Also the site you sent me to I have looked at, I guess I will have to make my own mark at 7.5 degrees BTDC. When your timing with a strobe is timing advance counterclockwise as your watching your mark?

Specs are the same as Randy's post above. Is your '74 Super an Automatic stick shift?

oldndragon Sun Feb 24, 2008 4:36 pm

No its not. Mine is a 4 speed. Maybe it was changed at some point, but the timing specs look the same. Anyway I still need help as far as my timing mark goes. I dont know where to set my timing. If I set it the notch right in the middle of the case halves it runs lousy. If I turn the mark to the left with the engine running and a strobe light it runs better but it doent start quick and I dont know where I am. If I go right past the case halves it wont run. What is the single notch? TDC? No dimple either.

It depends what motor the pulley originally went with. Assuming it's the original for your 74 super, which it probably is NOT, it would represent 7.5° BTDC. The original pulley would also have the dimple at TDC, or 0°.

You'll need to determine where TDC is on your own. See the following post, there's a suggestion from glutamodo about 3/4 down the page on how to do this. Then mark your pulley so you'll have it. If you turn the pulley so your rotor is pointing to the mark on the edge of the distributor body you'll be close to TDC on cylinder #1.
