Randys VW Hobby Shop www.1776cc.com Price: $1
Attention> All Texans- Randys VW Hobby Shop is
Located 20 miles south of Fredericksburg - near Comfort TX..
When the time is right, please make a trip to my shop so I can give you a short educational class on VW engines.. I will be happy to spend an hour with you and fill your mind with the information that will help you make the most informed decision about your engine purchase.. there are so many options.. and I have most of those parts on hand for you to see and hold.. there's no substitute for that experience..
I am a factory trained VW mechanic from the early 70's, also a self-taught machinist.
Factory tools and equipment and Factory Training..
Ive been self-employed since 1977 and have only recently put my shop back together on my country property near Comfort, Tx. I can do most machine shop services, and all engine repairs on Air-Cooled Vw’s.. Bring your own parts welcome.
I build very high quality VW engines the way the VW factory should have built them- for maximum horsepower and reliable operation.
I use new Cylinder Heads, new Pistons and Cylinders, new Rods, new Camshaft
and Lifters and more.. Lots of options.. From 1600cc to 1776cc Type1/Bug Engines to
2056cc Type 4/Bus Engines. I build every engine as though I was going to use it for myself, and I don't cut corners. So if you're shopping for price alone- I may not be your first choice.
Machine Work> boring and vertical milling:
Alignboring and Resurfacing: As far as I know I am the only person in Texas that can alignbore a Type 4 engine block (but only .020 over). Also I keep a wide variety of oversized Type 4 main bearings for your convenience. And obviously I can "a-bore" the Type 1 cases too. I can also resurface and bore your blocks and heads. Replacing the oil galley plugs is very important- and Ive got that covered as well.
The only projects that I choose to work on are those where the owner wants
1st class technical and mechanical repairs.. I strive to rebuild engines to a point of perfection using specific machine shop operations and procedures and precise assembly techniques- and of course quality replacement parts (all based on the customers budget).
I enjoy helping people with their projects, giving advise and making recommendations. My shop is a "hobby shop" so I make a little $$ from my labor and used parts, and I pass on all new parts on a cost basis. Also I enjoy educating people with time permitting. You can come for a visit and I will spend an hour showing you how all the pieces come together.
So for those of you who need service to your VW engine- just give me call anytime
@ 210 209 3597. I am a very low-volume/one-man shop and I am over 64yrs old, so don't expect same day service. I also buy used engines. So if you have something for sale give me a call. I am located about 50 miles NW of San Antonio near Comfort TX.
Thanks for looking, Randall Brown... 210 209 3597 cell

Mine was a bit more of a “project” than he normally prefers to take on; but when we got talking and he found out that the vehicle was a 1960 single cab - and that I was a vet - he agreed to help me.
The truck had been through an extensive renovation and was absolutely gorgeous. The engine that came with the purchase, however, was a mess. Randy pulled it, allowing me to leave the truck on his property, and took it apart to give me a thorough and precise diagnosis and a very (very, very) fair quote for work to be performed.
All through the process (two weeks) he would send me updates and pictures - even allowing me to come out to watch the work being performed; teaching me about the parts and how they fit to make the engine work. The trouble he went to to make that 1776 fit in the truck was probably worth a lot more than he charged. And when it was done he and I went on a test drive; after which he followed the truck to my home so he could take me back to pick up the car I’d arrived in. What service!
This man is knowledgeable; he is fast; he is fair; he is a natural teacher, and I have no higher praise than to say: “He is an honest, caring man.”
"Randy.....just wanted you to know that the last type 1 case you align-bored for me turned out great. It went together so sweet. I always wonder when mating a case if it is still going to turn over and spin like it should when it is finally torqued together. This one was one of the best I have ever had.....Keep up the good work (align-boring)

"I reached out to Randy looking for someone with experience to build my 1776 longblock. After several bad machine shop experiences, I had a garage full of parts and was not feeling ambitious enough to tackle the bottom end. After a few emails back and forth, Randy agreed to take on my job. He was even willing to work with my "limited" college-kid budget. I made the drive to San Antonio to delivery my parts. From our first meeting, Randy was nothing but friendly, knowledgable, and professional. Unlike some of the other fly-by-night guys, Randy had documents for me to sign and take home as well as a build sheet. Throughout the build, Randy provided frequent email updates with pictures, statuses, and even a continually updating price tracking sheet. He even completed the build way ahead of schedule. When I went to pick up my longblock, he was able to meet my schedule and walked me through all that I needed to know to get my new engine started and set up. Doing business with Randy was as absolute pleasure, and I would not hesitate to buy again or recommend to a friend."

I recently ordered an engine from Randy Brown's VW Hobby Shop after visiting with him in person and looking at his ads on The Samba. I have been in the car repair business, originally VW only, for 20 years and I was very impressed with Randy's knowledge of the VW air cooled engine and automotive stuff in general. This guy really knows his stuff.
I had planned on building an engine for a father/son project, but quickly came to the realization that Randy would do a much more thorough and thoughtful job than I am able to. His dedication to cleanliness, balancing and machine work far exceeds anything I was imagining. In negotiating a price, ordering parts and talking through the options, Randy was a delight to work with, flexible and always completely clear on what to expect and how much it would cost.
When my friend and I went out to Comfort to pick up the completed engine, Randy was so nice to take the time to show us his amazing shop and beautifully situated property. He assembles his engines in a literal clean room; has core blocks, new parts and machine tools organized in a truly enviable set up.
The engine he built for me is the most beautiful long block I've ever seen, I keep showing it to knowledgeable friends who are blown away. The level of detail and attention are so far above and beyond what I expected, I know for a fact that I will have Randy build any future engine for me. I highly recommend Randy to anyone looking to put the very best in their air-cooled VW.

Just want to let you know the engine has been running beautiful and powerful. Very happy with it. The EMPI 38EGAS and the 1776 makes a scary daily driver. I been running smooth a 60-70 MPH on the highway with plenty of pedal left. Once a while I punch it and it makes a nice throttle sound responding well. At 90 MPH I had to let off because I get a bit scare but still have pedal left to probably it beyond 100 MPH!!! Scary shit.
The only small problem I have is the Egas throttler sometimes don't return back at idle when I take the foot completely off. I have try different springs without luck. They seem to work for a few days but still having that small issue. I might change it to a single pict 34 if this continue.
Anyway just want to say hello and let you know the engine you build is extremely peppy.

I experienced a vintage VW owners worst nightmare...I had mechanical work done by a local SA shop, and when I drove my '79 Westy home from the shop, the oil light began staring back at me. Being a new transplant to the city, I now realized I needed a real air-cooled mechanic willing to listen to me and the problems my bus was having, willing to allow me to be hands-on and involved with knowing exactly both the diagnosis and prognosis of the work necessary, be upfront and honest about any and all issues, willing to share his time and wealth of expertise, and most important, be extremely knowledgeable and experienced, confident, sincere and respectful.
Once I met Randy Brown, I found every one of these qualities in him and his workmanship. He and I collaborated on my issues, and after a few weeks in Randy's dream shop, my bus and I confidently drove back to SA with all major problems repaired. DO NOT pass up calling on Randy for your VW mechanical needs. He is a true master of his craft.
