I am a factory trained VW mechanic from the early 70's, also a self-taught machinist.

Ive been self-employed since 1977 and have only recently put my shop back together on my country property near Comfort, Tx. I can do most machine shop services, and all engine repairs on Air-Cooled Vw’s.. Bring your own parts welcome.
I build very high quality VW engines the way the VW factory should have built them- for maximum horsepower and reliable operation.
I use new Cylinder Heads, new Pistons and Cylinders, new Rods, new Camshaft
and Lifters and more.. Lots of options.. From 1600cc to 1776cc Type1/Bug Engines to
2056cc Type 4/Bus Engines. I build every engine as though I was going to use it for myself, and I don't cut corners. So if you're shopping for price alone- I may not be your first choice.
Machine Work> boring and vertical milling:
Alignboring and Resurfacing: As far as I know I am the only person in Texas that can alignbore a Type 4 engine block (but only .020 over). Also I keep a wide variety of oversized Type 4 main bearings for your convenience. And obviously I can "a-bore" the Type 1 cases too. I can also resurface and bore your blocks and heads. Replacing the oil galley plugs is very important- and Ive got that covered as well.
The only projects that I choose to work on are those where the owner wants
1st class technical and mechanical repairs.. I strive to rebuild engines to a point of perfection using specific machine shop operations and procedures and precise assembly techniques- and of course quality replacement parts (all based on the customers budget).
I enjoy helping people with their projects, giving advise and making recommendations. My shop is a "hobby shop" so I make a little $$ from my labor and used parts, and I pass on all new parts on a cost basis. Also I enjoy educating people with time permitting. You can come for a visit and I will spend an hour showing you how all the pieces come together.

I recently ordered an engine from Randy Brown's VW Hobby Shop after visiting with him in person and looking at his ads on The Samba. I have been in the car repair business, originally VW only, for 20 years and I was very impressed with Randy's knowledge of the VW air cooled engine and automotive stuff in general. Just want to let you know the engine has been running beautiful and powerful. Very happy with it. The EMPI 38EGAS and the 1776 makes a scary daily driver. I been running smooth a 60-70 MPH on the highway with plenty of pedal left. Once a while I punch it and it makes a nice throttle sound responding well. At 90 MPH I had to let off because I get a bit scare but still have pedal left to probably it beyond 100 MPH!!! Scary shit.
The only small problem I have is the Egas throttler sometimes don't return back at idle when I take the foot completely off. I have try different springs without luck. They seem to work for a few days but still having that small issue. I might change it to a single pict 34 if this continue.
Anyway just want to say hello and let you know the engine you build is extremely peppy.

I took the motor out of my 1971 Super Beetle (1600cc Dual Port) , loaded it onto my truck and drove all the way to Comfort TX from Houston, having my doubts about Randy's shop of course, but when I got to Randy's shop I had a good feeling. His shop was very organized and clean. After we spoke for a bit about what I wanted to have in my engine and Randy explained what would be done and how, I left it in his hands. Weeks later after upgrading several parts such as an EMPI 38E gas Carb, New Cylinder Heads complete with valves, an Engle W-100 Camshaft and lifters and having the rest of the engine cleaned and balanced, what I picked up was a BEAST! That motor roared so loud I had a smile from ear to ear, even all the way back to Houston. He was honest about what needed to be done and communication could not have been better.
