Hybrid 12V Starter on 6V Flywheel NO Mod   Price: $245
Your starter will be converted to run on 12 Volts or I will supply a rebuilt starter for $60. NOTE: Your starter must meet the conditions listed under CORE CHARGE seen below.

When you convert your VW form 6 V to 12 V you can replace your starter with the BOSCH HYBRID 6/12. No modifications are necessary to install this 12 V starter in a 6 V transmission with a 6 V flywheel. Parts are refurbished or replaced as determined by the shop.

You donít need to spend the time and money to remove the engine, replace flywheel, Pressure Plate, Clutch Disc, Release Bearing, pinion bushing or grind the bell housing. Using a stock 6 volt starter in a 12 volt conversion will damage your flywheel and starter teeth. Donít risk sudden starter failure and getting stranded with a burned out 6 volt starter.

All starters are 100% tested, to the following performance specifications: Test voltage 11.5 V; Solenoid current < 11 A; Total current < 55 A.

To install a 12 Volt engine in a 6 Volt Manual Transmission the following flywheel is available. This special flywheel can be used when you want to install a later style engine into an early 6 volt car that has been converted to 12 Volts with the BOSCH HYBRID 6/12 starter.

I have a 64 beetle that I believe the reason I got such a great price on was because it has the 6v starter running at 12vdc. It was a pain to get started because you had to bump it just right. I bought a starter from Wayne and it arrived and you could tell it was PROFESSIONALLY rebuilt and I installed it and now I love this car. I would recommend his starters 100%. If you get a rebuilt starter, take it apart and make sure the armature commutator has been machined parallel to the brushes and it has new brushes. It should also have a new bushing installed, use calipers for measurement. Ask the seller if the armature was tested on a growler for winding-to-winding shorts, winding shorts to ground and open windings. The solenoid current should not be over 11 amps after the solenoid engages and 22 amps before it engages and the total no load current should not be over 55 amps. Make sure it rotates in the correct direction; field coils for other starters will fit, but they cause the starter to rotate in the opposite direction. Make sure the solenoid is good; its screws are sealed so you canít inspect the contacts for ware without voiding the warrantee. You will need to unsolder the solenoid wires to remove the solenoid cap and inspect the contacts for ware, pitting and burning. Make sure whole starter is painted to prevent rust. This is how I test these starters. You can buy a 6 volt starter, but it will trash your flywheel teeth. Most rebuilds donít have the armature support adapter to perform the above quality control tests. However, most stores will sell you an endless supply of untested starters so can install them one by one, on your own time.

Beetle 1958-1966, Ghia 1958-1966, TYPE 3 1962-1966. You will receive a refund after the shop inspects and tests your core for damage. Starters used in a 12 volt system will not be accepted. Case diameter; 90mm, 3.543", SR11X.

The larger case Bus starter can not be converted, 16318. Case diameter; 100.2mm, 3.945"

The HYBRID 6/12 will replace 6 V starters on Beetle 1946-1966, Ghia 1956-1966, Bus 1950-66, TYPE 3 1962-1966

This post shows the damage to a 6 volt flywheel caused buy running a 6 volt starter in a 12 volt system. This causes the teeth on the 6 V flywheel and the starter to wear and even chip off. Your flywheel is being damaged with a 6 V starter operating with 12 V, EVEN THOUGH NO ABNORMAL SOUND IS PRESENT! The people who think itís OK to operate a 6 V starter in 12 V system have not taken into account the cost of repairing the damage to the starter and flywheel or the cost of the labor.

Grinding out the trans, what a mess. You have to grind the area around the mounting bolts, but be careful not to cut into the bolt tunnel. There will be a lot of aluminum dust, so remember to clean the area off.

Customer supplied parts are not covered by the warranty. The warranty covers starters against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one year from the date of purchase, when itís owned by the original purchaser and remains installed on the vehicle on which it was originally installed. The starter will be repaired or replaced if the starter has failed under the terms of this warranty and starter is sent back for evaluation. The warranty is void after cranking an engine for an excessive time period which will damage the internal insulation and will result in discoloration.

I will supply a REBUILT STARTER to convert for $60 or you supply a 6 V starter for the conversion, the starter must be in good working condition. This means a starter left outside with a rusted, damaged or worn shaft (12.42 mm minimum) or a starter run on 12 V will not be accepted. The starter must be received before the conversion can begin or the core charge included. Pre 1958 cannot be converted. If you send a bad starter you will be responsible for return shipping. DO NOT spin the starter on the bench without a transmission or shaft support fixture, it will be damaged and useless for the conversion. The starter must be shipped with appropriate packing material to prevent damage in shipping. A core refund will be sent after the starter shop inspects your starter for signs of damage or operation on 12V.
