1953 Zwitter Convertible, Matching Numbers, Rare!
This former VW Trends magazine feature car is one of the most rare Convertible Beetles in the World. It is a early 1953 Zwitter, or "Oval Dashed Split Window" era car which were only produced for a very short window of time in late 1952 through early 1953. The production numbers of these cars were extremely low, especially for the Convertibles. Only a small handful remain and this is definitely one of the top if not arguably the nicest known surviving example in existence being that it is matching numbers. It has spent the better part of the last 25 years in museum collections of heavy duty VW collectors here in North America.
It has a long list of extremely cool and rare features including being a matching numbers original 25hp engine car, original pan, correct original polished aluminum window frames in excellent shape, starter button on the dash, correct 1953 only ash tray, mint heart taillights, Zwitter only small cap and neck gas tank, incredibly rare original ribbed and boxed convertible only semaphores, ribbed convertible doors, flat H rear apron, original early large logo SEKURIT glass, and a nice set of 5.60-15 bias ply wide white wall tires.
The body is in good shape, solid, dry, clean, and has the correct parts including the correct early wide spring Convertible W decklid with early L handle, ribbed convertible doors, early flat hood, correct rear fenders with low mount original heart taillights, clean original pan, and the flat rear apron. We believe the color is L11, Pastel Green but aren't certain. If anyone can positively identify it please let us know. It is a very attractive color and the paint is clean and respectable. The chrome European spec blade bumpers with short bumperettes are also in nice shape.
The interior is nice and correct and features the early H pattern square seats with tan cloth covers, beautiful cloth door panels, mint uncut dash with the rare 1953 starter button, nice original batwing steering wheel, 1953 smooth dash ashtray, correct early speedometer, original radio block off plate, early convertible rear view mirror with plastic sunvisor, correct original chrome ribbed door handles and window winders with ivory escutcheons, rubber floor mats, and the original hardboard glove box. The mohair headliner is in nice shape as well.
Mechanically this early Convertible has defied the odds by retaining its original matching numbers 25hp engine for the last 56 years! That is a phenomenal achievement when you think about how few cars of this vintage can say the same. Not only is it still intact but it runs excellently. Some of the early particulars include the single tipped VW stamped muffler, 1953 only smooth fan shroud, and the early Bosch D voltage regulator. The transaxle is the correct split case first gear non-synchro and it functions nicely. The electrical system is still 6 volt and everything works well including the semaphores. The tires are nice bias ply wide whites mounted on correctly two-toned 15 inch smoothies and topped with chromed hubcaps with painted logos.
This can truly be seen as your window of opportunity to put this monster early Convertible in your garage. There are so few Zwitter Convertibles like this in existence and it will likely be years or even decades before another one as nice as this hits the open market. This example will certainly be a standout in any collection.
