Hitting the gears on the money getting to be a problem?
It's more than likely a case of petrolis neglectus on the shift shaft bushings,--who lubricates the shift shaft support bushings anyway???
Nobody.
They are always just plain worn out after years of neglect, and the shift shaft is wobbling inside the old bushings when you go for a gear.
Here's Brand New Custom Made Delrin Replacement Support Bushings for the 84 to 91 Vanagon shift shaft rods--
These are custom machined out of polyacetal, are bullet proof, will outlast your Van, and fit the front as well as the rear bushing holder perfect--plus you won't need the NLA rubber boots on the rear bushing any more.
It's not needed or required.
Take a look at the stock bushings, and notice they only have 3 points of support on the shaft internally.
The new Delrin bushings are straight bored all they way through and support the shaft the full length of the bushing--big advantage / improvenment over the originals.
The shift shaft bushings are NO LONGER AVAILABLE FROM VW PARTS.
