Documenting fixing up my newly-acquired Wild Westerner.
I started playing with removing the flat black paint that was put in the engine compartment. This progress was made with carb cleaner. While O'Reily's brand worked to soften it, Gumout brand seems to be more effective. View other images: From vwwestyman Search Forums for photo

1978 Swiss Fire Rescue Crew Cab Tcash
This beautiful Crew Cab served as a Swiss Army Fire Rescue and EMT response unit in the small village of Saas-Balen just outside of Zurich, Switzerland. It comes complete with the original hoops and canvas canopy, blue emergeny light, Bosch "neener" sirens, very nice original HWE commercial roof rack, 1978 owner's manual (in English), original Swiss Army log book documenting every trip it took during its years of service, and detailed maintanence records through 1983. It remained in Switzerland until 2005 and had its last driving permit from there at that time. In the years since, it has been in the hands of Volkswagen collectors.
The body is in very nice condition, exceptionally dry, impressively straight, and was resprayed in the original color of Pastel White (L 90 D). The truck bed, gates, and floors are way above average as you can see in the extensive album of pics on my website. Details to note include the refinished original bed and canopy wood strips and the canvas rear flap is torn. An additional piece of original canvas will be included.
The interior is exceptionally clean and has been reupholstered in the correct color and pattern material. Sound deadener was installed behind the paneling to reduce road noise as well. Take note of the cleanliness of the dash, original headliner, and the floors front and rear.
Mechanically it is a nice driver with just 54,000 original miles. The 1700cc engine runs well, the entire braking system was rebuilt in 2011 including cylinders, pads, and lines. Additionally it received a new clutch and a set of new tires at that time. View other images: From Tcash Search Forums for photo
