1971 Super Beetle Fuel Tank Strainer Filter
The 71 Super
There IS a brass strainer/Filter inside the gas tank on my 1971 Super Beetle. As far as I can tell it is stock and no vendors carry a replacement.

Here you can see the dramatic size difference between the stock super beetle brass filter strainer when compared to the one for the standard beetle.

The super beetle one is on the right and the standard beetle one is on the left.

NOTE: even my local VW shop did not know that super beetles have a different fuel pick up system. They sold me a petcock vale and this very long brass filter. The also sold me the incorrect gasket for the fuel level sending

There is a red colored cloth washer on the drain plug when I removed it. I found a kitchen faucet cloth washer with the correct inside diameter, but as you can see it is a bit large.

I am concerned that the faucet cloth washer will not be able to handle the fuel and will leak.

Time will tell.

Here is the standard beetle brass filter. What you are looking at is a piece of cork that is about 15mm from the bottom of the filter. It just so happens, that the pick up tube sits about 15mm from the bottom of the tank.

So I had to remove this cork so it would not block the pick up tube. Also the inside diameter of the hole in the cork was too small to fit over the metal fuel pick up tube.

I used a serious of drill bits to expand the hole in the cork until it became so thin it fell out.

The standard but brass filter is too long and sticks out the drain plug. I was hoping I could just push it on the metal fuel pick up tube, but the tube turns quickly and the standard bug brass filter won't fit.

There IS a brass strainer/Filter inside the gas tank on my 1971 Super Beetle. As far as I can tell it is stock and no vendors carry a replacement.

Here was my solution. I first removed the cork from the new standard beetle brass filter (I did that prior to taking this pic) and then I cut about 40mm from the bottom of the new filter using a sharp pair of scissors (the filter on the left is the standard beetle one). This is my new filter.

I used a sharp utility knife and cut around the base of the old super belter brass filter and then just pulled it off.

Here it is in all it fuel filtering glory! The filter on the left was the original one that was broken. The filter on the right is the one I created from a standard beetle brass filter.

Ready for 40 years of use.

NOTE: don't put the newly created filter back on the metal fuel pick up tube until after you cleaned out and sealed the tank...that is if you are doing that.

Here you can see how tight the fit is. It took me a while (and I was very careful) to push the new screen onto the old aluminum connector.

I used different sized drill bits to expand the top of the brass filter so that it could fit over the aluminum connector. I only expanded the very top and then pushed the rest on.

It won't come off, even if it comes loose from the connector because the bottom of the brass filter sits on the top of the drain plug.

This pic was taken with a borescope and shows the brass filter connected to the fuel pick up line. You can see the brass filter on the left side just below the reflection. The drain plug has not been removed and sits directly below the brass strainer filter.

You can see how the fuel pick up line goes from the filter at the bottom of the tank to the exit point. This pick up line is welded to the tank and cannot be removed. The other end of the pick up line is where you attach the cloth fuel line.

To remove the drain plug use an allen wrench (hex key). This is a 10mm. It was pretty easy to remove it.

You can see the fuel pick up line to the right of the drain. This is where you connect your cloth fuel line to.

Once the drain plug is removed you can access the brass filter. There is also a special cloth type gasket on the underside of the drain plug.

I have not found anyone who sells a replacement.

Here you can see the brass filter strainer and the pick up tube. Note that the pick up tube has broken through the brass strainer filter.

Mine was already damaged, but if your is still good be very careful. When removing the brass strainer filter do NOT grab the brass part with needle nose pliers because you will damage it. Try to use an angled screw driver and pull it off from the top of the filter strainer.

The pick up tube is cut at an angle, so the driver side of the tube is closer to the bottom of the gas tank than the passengers side.

Again, this brass strainer is NOT the same as the ones for the standard beetle.

Here is the strainer after it was pulled off the fuel pick up tube from inside the fuel tank.

Notice how small it is compared to the standard beetle one that you can buy anywhere. Also notice that there is no cork in the brass strainer (there is cork in the top part that seals it to the pick up tube). This strainer is about 40mm long.

I am using a braided metal line with a plastic sheath to make sure their is no clogs in the pick up line (this also works great to clean the rest of the fuel hardlines).

WARNING: if you do this with the brass filter strainer on you may destroy it. Only do this once the bras filter strainer has been removed (of if you don't have one). Check first.

You can see how the solid pick up tube grabs fuel from the bottom of the tank near the drain plug and then carries to the nipple where the cloth fuel line is connected.

Here is the top of the brass filter strainer. This is cork, and it helps hold the filter onto the pick up tube. It may also be used for bouncy to help keep the brass filter strainers on the metal pick up tube.

WARNING: do not damage this cork. Cork is hard to drill or shape, it tends to fall apart. At least for me.

Here is another view of the brass filter strainer. Notice how the brass screen has been press under the aluminum (?) piece. Also, you can see how the cork fits into the aluminum piece.

I removed this brass screen using a sharp utility knife and pressed the new brass screen onto the aluminum with my fingers.
