This is looking up from underneath the right rear of a 1972 Super Beetle (1974 engine). Note the small black wire which disappears at the interface of transmission and engine.

1. I think I've removed enough carpet.
2. Try as I might, neither vent cover fits into the slot. I can sort of get one end in but then the gap on the other end is a big as my finger.
3. The vent insert part of the piece measures about 5/8th of an inch.
4. The vent hole in the sheet metal seems to be pretty close to that, too.

#2 top dead center. Exhaust on the left
I had lost almost all of he adjustment on all valve rockers. All 8.
The left one is a new 1.25 rocker.
The right is the intake and was not changed. The pushrod had augered into the rocker pockets. All 8. All oil channels were cleaned and good and oil travel checked before install on heads. Empi 1.25 looks like bad steel
