Templates for my Stock Boxed Arms Vanapplebomb
This is my twist on "boxing" trailing arms. I used pieces of corrugated cardboard cut up and taped down to make a mock up of the final product. I may add some additional gusseting to the spring plate tab and the bearing carrier. View other images: From Vanapplebomb Search Forums for photo

1957 Baja Bug thefladge
Working on the reduction boxes. Getting ready to install all NOS bearings and new seals and gaskets. Since my car uses the laydown adapter kit, I'm considering drilling and tapping the outer half of the reduction boxes for a small oil fill plug. The stock fill and drain plugs are now at the sides with the reduction boxes mounted in this position. View other images: From thefladge Search Forums for photo

Colin's Teardown and Hopeful Rebuild VW Colin Davis VW
Hey everybody, I've been around Samba for years, but until now have never left a digital footprint, it's probably time. I have been using tips and advice from many of you and I thank you in advance. Everybody likes to see old VWs wethers they're nice or not, so I'll throw up some pictures as well.
My build is a 1969 Beetle hopefully converted into a semi-stock daily driver/ slight off-roader. I'm not too into welding, and I don't feel like spending too much money, because I'm in the whole enough as it is. However I would like something I could take to the forest and do some beaten trails on.
I bought this car for $1,000 and spent a few hundred more getting it home. I've started to do a basic teardown, but I'm to the point now where I'm going to have to start making decisions.
I believe this has a Ball Joint front suspension and IRS rear suspension. I would like to keep them the same, but do a slight upgrade if needed. I'm not that familiar with suspension so I'm trying to do stuff with as little fabrication as possible.
Engine that came in the baja is a H5 Case, has since been removed. I don't know what I'm going to do with the 1500cc but practice a teardown and dry rebuild with it. I have since bought a 1971 beetle convertible with an ok running 1600cc motor with an AE case. From what I've heard the H5s are crap and the AEs are pretty good to rebuild. For now I intend a simple swap unless this rebuild takes me into winter. I don't know what to do with this convertible though, frame rails are toast.
It seems someone hand painted onto the fiberglass fenders, hood, and light piece. The rest of the bug is a weird white too. I want to paint it but don't know if I should just replace the fiberglass or not.
I don't even want to get started about the electrical yet. The tranny is probably stuck, have thought about the bus swap but don't have the $$
Promising things: Roll Cage- Though I don't know if it's considered complete or not. There is hardly any rust on the car exc View other images: From VW Colin Davis VW Search Forums for photo

Brainstorming Ways To Extend The Shock Towers For These Rear Bus Shocks Vanapplebomb
These are the shocks I will be using. Right now I am thinking of splitting the shock towers and inserting in a plate of 1/4" steel, then welding up the seams and maybe tacking on an upper shock mount stud to finish things off. View other images: From Vanapplebomb Search Forums for photo

1957 Baja Bug thefladge
Leaky reduction box on the passenger side. Gear oil was all over the brakes and inner half of the rim. It seemed to be seeping all the way down the stub axle as some fluid even reached the underside of the axle nut that holds the drum on. Gear oil was also leaking down the back of the backing plate. 1957 Baja Bug thefladge
My spring plate retainer solution for my Baja Bug equipped with reduction boxes. Wheel hop caused the spring plates to push the retainer straps outward and they would slip off the bottom stops. I made new retainer straps with the bottom stops welded on. They rest against the stock bottom stops which were ground down. Also switched to Sway-A-Way spring plates to reduce flex.
