"When you step on the brakes, the steering wheel goes all over the place."
Leaky brakes on one side are probably a good cause for that kind of problem.

This gap is not normal. At this time cause is undetermined, but a missing compression spring or improperly installed bushings are at the top of the list of thoughts.
