Dowel pin puller is made from rocker shafts and weld, it can pull dowels from 8-dowel cranks.

Using the metric 10mm X 1.50 pitch grade eight bolt about 30mm long inserted into the star wheel on the brakes will remove the star wheel with no damage to it. The adjustment screw usually can be unscrewed from the star wheel, once the drum is remove and brake parts out of the way. But, it seems like the star wheel likes to seize up in the brake backing plate. Don't use a chisel or hammer as that will damage the gear or teeth on the star wheel. This method works every time.

I had a friend make this with machine shop and welding involved. Used to remove eight dowel tight fitting flywheels from cranks and will also remove wedge mated flywheels with no damage to parts. Expensive to reproduce but maybe you also have some good friends who do machine work and welding to copy these tools.

I made this from an old VW spark plug factory tool, which comes in the tire and spark plug tool kits. You can find these at swap meets for next to nothing in cost. The top part is just a scrap piece of square tubing and I cut V-notches in it, to fit around the ends of the bottom of the coil-over EMPI shocks. The bottom part of the tool fits into my floor jack, once you remove the support piece, which usually goes under the body or frame. Some floor jacks do not have a round platform or support area which will remove, so look for the cheap floor jacks. The VW spark plug tool , once cut, fits nicely into my hole on the floor jack. The other pics show how this fits into my floor jack.

The funny looking bar with the big hole in it is an EMPI tool and available through them. It is used both on the flywheel to hold it while you tighten up the gland nut or on four or five wheel brake drums to remove the axle nuts. I found the square tubing from China would bend, so had my brother weld on a metal plate , using 5/16 or 3/8 inch thick plate and about two feet long. It's a solid piece of steel and now, will not bend with any amount of torque you use. The other parts are commonly available 3/4 drive breaker bar, a cheater pipe for leverage and impact socket size of 1-7/16 to remove frozen on gland nuts and axle nuts . This will not break with over 400 ft. lbs. of torque. Works on all Beetle gland nuts and axle nuts. Together, both do the job. I found my impact gun would not remove some of the frozen on gland nuts or axle nuts. You can use different size impact sockets for larger Bus axle nuts or aftermarket gland nuts which are bigger than the normal 36mm or 1-7/16 inch size.
