New Wiring Harness- Injector Ends and Boots
JJM86
Injector ends on the new Squareback wiring harness. The tan boot is reused from a donor harness and the black one is a new reproduction from Auto Atlanta. They're selling two, three, four, and five-pin boots for the D-Jet harnesses (sold for 914's at Porsche prices). They're a bit expensive at $12/ea. But if your old boots are brittle, broken, or missing, the new ones are worth it. They're better quality than I expected and the opening is smaller than the original boots, so they pul down ad fit tightly over the plug housing.

New Wiring Harness
JJM86
Some photos of the finished product of my '71 Squareback wiring harness build. All new teflon coated wire, new connectors, some new boots and fresh shrink wrap. Finding some components and getting the build done nicely was a bit tough but the car runs much better and the new harness solved a mystery problem that was plaguing me for months.

New Wiring Harness- Sensor Ends and Ground Wires
JJM86
Here's the core group of sensor plugs and grounds. The top plug is the Intake Temp Sensor, then the Throttle Valve Switch, 3 ground leads, Trigger Points, and the brown housing has the Cyl. Head Temp Sensor. A new boot for the TVS (should've gotten one for the Trigger pts., too). I shrink wrapped the rear of all the boots, where the wires go in, to add some extra protection from crap getting in there. It's especially helpful on the reused boots that are a bit stretched out.

New Wiring Harness- The 'Big Plug'
JJM86
Where all the action takes place, at the ECU connector. I purchased a donor harness (and ECU) from a Samba member with a '71 SB and used it as both a parts source for the plastic plug housings and as a template to build the whole harness. If you have the luxury of removing your original harness and building off of that, you can save the $$ on the donor set up but I need to move my car, so having the donor allowed me to spend plenty of time on the build and not worry about mistakes ruining my [poorly] working harness. I obtained new board edge connectors (the little fork-like ends inside this plug) from another Samba member (thanks again!) but I've read about people reusing the old ones. I had a plan to reuse mine because they are NLA from the original supplier (AMP/Tyco) and I initially couldn't find anyone with a supply. I used red wire because I got it super cheap from work. I'd rather it was white but really, you only see it when you take the ECU plug out or open up the harness, so it was a worthwhile sacrifice.

New Wiring Harness- Another Junction
JJM86
The branch for the fuel pump wire. I got a new blade connector for this plug from my friend who has been a Porsche mechanic since the '60s. This connector was used on 911's, 912's, and 914's 'til the end of air-cooled production (1997/98). I lost the part number but I'm pretty sure it was used in the heater fan system (among other places). I couldn't get one from the VW dealer but maybe some would keep old stock around. It has a Beetle # starting in 111 as far as I know.

New Wiring Harness- Branching Out
JJM86
This is one of the junctions going from many to fewer wires. It was tough to get things wrapped properly so that everything was sealed and the right length away from the ECU and towards the end points. I messed up a few times and had to cut and re-shrink some parts. Next time I would work from the ECU out, instead of the other way (as I did). It's not as perfect as the original one but it works a lot better and is still sealed up and makes it to where it needs to go.

New Wiring Harness- Mistakes and Repair
JJM86
Here I made a length error and wound up not being able to connect my 3-4 cyl. injector plugs. I had to cut open the shrink and get some more slack on the grounds. I managed to make a slit for the branch and slip some shrink down over the opening, then I used some industrial super glue to seal up the joint. It isn't ideal but it works and it's all sealed up.
