Look at the bucket cars. I got to ride this train with this fellow at the controls when I was little. The buckets had a Volkswagen industrial engine as backup power if the electric failed.
Side story: Ward Kimble (artist for Disney) turned Walt onto trains. Ward lived in San Gabriel, Ca. and had a train and caboose in his backyard. One day Ward invited Walt over to see his trains. Walt fell in love with the trains. Since Walt was getting ready to build Disneyland ( the new place) Walt decided to have the Big Train run around the park. A small airplane crashed into Wards backyard and the story came out in the local papers about Ward and Disney. Wards son used to have parities in the caboose and the neighbors complained about Ward firing up the Train because of the smoke, soot and noise. The town in Wards backyard was just a facade like a movie set. In one of the Donald Duck cartoons Chip and Dale live in one of Donald's toy villages. Ward Kimble was the start of it all. You can see Ward's "Grizzly Flats R.R." on the web. Look up Tom Snyder's "Tomorrow Show". There is a whole program about Mr. Kimble. |
