First Generation VW powered 51' Tempo Matador Vidal & Sohn Werke. CV cardan joint rebuild.
Joint design is pin / carrier / bearing blocks I never seen before. The axle has a press fit pin that spins a carrier connected to the other axle carrier via a center ring block connected via needle bearing blocks.
There is a grease port only at one side, and due the intricate design passageways it is insufficient to provide sufficient grease to the other half (the transmission side axle). Needle rollers completely gone under the plug cover, so every time the axle from the transmission wanted to spin would clunk on the carrier bore. Required complete disassembly, clean up, press out the pin, blast, paint, hone the barrels for new needle rollers. Installed new orings, thrust washer and drill and taped one of the plugs on the opposite side from the OG lube port to lube properly the other side which is very hard to get any grease (trans axle side). |
