| A stock Type 181 under the paint, my own 'OTTO' (a 1973 Type 181) has been painted to superficially resemble a North Afrika campaign Deutsche Afrika Korps used by the Luftwaffe. Those of you familiar with 2WK history will recall that famed German pilot Joachim Marsaille used a Kubelwagen as his personal transportation between missions. It had the letters 'OTTO' painted on its sides in large size. The story behind my vehicle is rather interesting. It was previously owned by a retired US Army sniper who was also a WW2 history buff. He used it as his vehicle in Baja, CA, Mexico, where he and his wife maintained a vacation villa. The Wehrmacht license plate has since been changed slightly to reflect the 'WL' prefix for Luftwaffe vehicles, since we are using it in our historical reenactment group (LARA, or Luftwaffe Aircrew Reenactors Association). |
