Back in the mid 1970s, there was enough engine and transmission repair work at the VW Dealer where I worked to keep 2 of us busy all the time.
Most of the brass synchro rings, shift forks, & valve guides went into the beer fund recycling bucket. I got to looking at a couple of brass reverse gear selector forks and in a moment of whimsy, decided that they looked a lot like turtles. Some green and colored touch-up paint later and there you have them. Still hanging out after 40+ years.
