My Landis Hydraulic Cylindrical Grinder Posted: Sun Feb 01, 2009 11:11 am     Views: 478      Rating: Not rated

This is a Landis OD/ID grinder all hydraulic. I bought this machine to do wedgemating on VW cranks and flywheels. This will grind the taper in the flywheel and crank in one single set up. So both tapers will match. This is the only way to assure proper angles on the tapers. Note the ID attachment built-in on the machine. This ID attachment was $7500 in its hayday. The grinder can grind to less than 1/10,000 inch accuracy.

Most if not all of the wedgemated jobs out there are done separately. Do the angles match? Who knows.

Also, the tapers are just machine-finish and pretty rough. So every time you unhook the wedged parts they eat each other and gall. Pretty soon there will not by any accurate surface for wedging.

Grinding the surfaces gives the most accurate and smooth finish. Much like machine tool arbors that also tapered, they can be R/R'd and maintain their surfaces.

I also use this machine to clean up the camshafts in-between the lobes to improve windage.

This has the original paint job from factory.
