Are there only 2 types of axles (short and long) for the tunnel case/swingaxle transaxle? Also, how long are the two or more types of axles? Can 50s split case axles/tubes/retaining plates be used on the later model tunnel case transaxles? I have a 60s swingaxle, and am replacing one of the axle tubes because my drivers side bearing housing/shock mount is cracked. I was just curious to know what to look out for or ask for when trying to get an axle for the 60s swingaxle transmission in my 56 beetle.

Thanks

I'll take a stab at it? There are short up to '65 long '66-'67 1/2, long with long splines '67 1/2 to '68 and higher in non U.S. models. Hope that hepls a bit and perhaps someone can elaborate more on this?

How hard is it to replace the axles, tubes, and bearing housing? I believe I have the long axles on my 66 sedan and I want to switch over to short axles so I can install 205/70s in the rear. Is it possible to pull the axles without removing the tranny?

Use the crashbox axles and tubes! Twice as strong as the later models

1966 model year and down are 22 1/2" to bearing-26 3/4"overall 1967 only are 23 3/8" to bearing 27 3/4" overall 1968 are 5/8" longer on splines than 67 so,there are 3 different length overall axles. 36hp are same as 40 hp and 50hp they just never had more than 36hp put to them. 40 hp same thing 40 hp put to them. 1966 had 50hp so on so on. double strength?? same forging .. axle tubes are same BUT end casting is 66 and down and 67 onup..
