I hooked my car up to my wifes SUV via towbar and off we went. I could put the car in gear and pop the clutch and the car starts, but dies as soon as I press the clutch or put it in neutral. I can keep it from dying by keeping the gas fully engaged but as soon as I let off it dies. My wife said that she could feel me pushing her when I pushed on the gas while in 1st gear. The car does not start when not being pushed/pulled. Can anyone help me out on what the problem is or additional things I can check to rule it out. I already pulled the wire off of the spark plug and stuck a screwdriver in it while my wife turned the starter. I saw a couple of small sparks. Any help is appreciated.

The idle circuit in the carb might be clogged up. It's time for a rebuild. |

Could be a lot of things but a good place to start is to get the ignition system figured out. Don't know what year you have.
New points and condensor and set with a dwell meter would be a good place to start.
Then adjust the valves.
And finally set the timing to spec when you are at the correct idle.
Then start looking for vacuum leaks. |
