What are you using for spindles? What type of suspension are you using? Ball joint, link pin, A-arm? A little more info would be useful. If you are good at fabricating, then I dont see a problem. My question to you is why?

Dub Owner Thu Mar 09, 2006 10:32 pm

Link pin, why? I mean to put the front brakes of a jetta on the rear of my rail buggy. I figure rear disc brakes my help me stop better. I wont have front brakes. Im gonna have some of them spindle mount wheels.

Are the Jetta disc spline? If not, you won't able to use them without some type of spline hub. vwclass11 wrote: My question to you is why? Same here, why?

The "WHY" part of the question is the part about Jetta FRONT brakes in the rear. That's what doesn't make sense?  The front brake rotors will take wheel bearing and the rears brake will need a splined rotor so the axle can turn the wheel.

I see what you mean its just that i am parting my 80 jetta and the front brakes are practicly new. They only have 150 miles on them. I will just go with drums.

Is it possible at all to mate the reduction gearboxes from the early buses to an IRS?

Also what kind of shock set up would you guys use for cruising around trails and rocky terain with small to no jumps, where small is just a bad bump in the road.

I live in salt lake city Utah, and for those that know the area, its just trails and mountains so I won't be jumping very much around here.

so if i read right you cut the outer casing on both beams(one at a time) at thies points and turn twords the car no more than 3/4 of an inch and then reweld the entire beam do to the factory just tacking....I just want to be clear on this befor i do it.....ask ten times work once....Dave

You might also consider putting in adjusters just in case the ride is too stiff. You might want to back it off.

see i did overlook something....thanks B5

also, for the sake of keeping everything aligned, do only one tube at a time. speaking from experience, it is very difficult to realign tubes once it has been cut into a left and right half

Way back in this thread I think penguin stated:
#3 in his list was to cut the top of the bal joint frame head off to mount a link pin beam.

HBB stated in a later post that should be ok if the beam is supported to the firewall.

What I had in mind was cut off the top and clearance the tunnel for a rack and tie rods, mount a warrier 6" longer beam w/rack & pinion. Then brace the beam like the Oasis diagram shows for the front end.

I am new to baja's and do not know what terrain I will end up using it on, but like to overbuild and make it safe. Did not want to cut off and tube the whole thing, or framehead coversion. This seems easier since no alignment issues w/beam.

Thank you in advance for your opinions.

so from what I understand, you have a balljoint framehead that you plan on running with a linkpin beam? this was an idea I was toying with at one time. If you cut off the top of the balljoint framehead, leaving only supports for the lower torsion tube, you are right, this will eliminate major alignment issues. if you will brace the beam with the cage, I see no reason why it would not work quite well.

Thank you HBB. When the welder gets it done I will post pictures.

Hey Brad, how about a link to USMCord1's 'adding adjusters' thread? Lots of pics...

Of so from what i got out of brads spill at first was that link pin is better than ball joint for the baja. but still being a little confused i could stand to have that a little more clear being new to VW's and Bajaing since the off roading i will be doing in my baja consits of mostly mud and logging trails and willl also be used for an every day driver Will a ball joint front end be ok due to a low budget income or would it be worth it to pay some one who can fix it to change the axle to link pin ?

a properly built ball joint front end will be fine. install adjusters and gusset the shock towers and get either lift spindles or thing arms and spindles and chances are if you not a mad man you wont be wanting for more. if you dont plan on flying through pot holes at 60+mph and launching the car off of aquaducts your not going to break anything
