just picked up a 57 baja for $700 has not run in 10 years but pans are not rusted through. though i see a rust crack into the corner by the lower door hinge... has, almost new 1600cc not in car. new clutch but looks a lill rusty, flywheel has a lill rust too(is that ok?). new gas shocks, nothing big really.(vw store told him they semi off road, how can i know?) new master and slave cylinders(vw store told him he had to have the german ones $65 each, why is this?) two sets of baja bumpers. tranny is a 60's non-split case swing axle! plus has off road engine strap mount. the 12v wire harness is crazy to look at. i'll have to show a pic cuz i don't know where to begin. looks hi tech. guy said a turbo engine was in it last. trippy stuff is.. has major fiberglass slathered under fenders where not really needed(support?). and above gas tank under radio, why? it looks fine on the other side next to steering wheel. plus the running board area where bolt holes were is covered with bondo. it's now made to look natural and looks smooth but hey, i want nerf bars. what do i do about that one? scrap it out and retap where the holes are? i could also see semaphore slots but they were covered with bondo. do i want to dig that out too just for fun? i mean hell that sounds cool to me. are they spendy? please tell me i good a got deal cuz i am still on a see saw in my mind. i have a 64 baja but man it's rusty and it hurts to look at the rear floor pan or when i open the door. plus i put a new tranny in her and can not stop leaks out of the backing plates where the axle bolts on. what should i do about THAT one please? and i'm gonna pass in onto my lill cousin when he turn 16. he's in love with it... he always talks about the skateboard wheel gas peddle. i could'nt let him down so i'm gonna start on my new baby. hope she lasts forever! if you guys can please pour any info into my questions i am listening big time. thanks!

If the heater channels are solid, I'd say you got a pretty good deal on a mostly complete car. I had to replace both floorpans (not that big of a deal) and both heater channels (royal PITA) on my car
You will catch flak from VW purists for having an oval widow baja though, but it wasn't your doing. Sounds like for a couple hundred bucks you'll have a running baja.
The leaks from the backing plates are bad wheel seals. Thats pretty easy to fix, but the brake shoes are probably soaked with oil and will have to be changed at the same time. Sometimes people try to mix and match backing plates, bearing retainers and axles and that can cause the oil leak.
