A friend of mine just happend to see this car sitting in the mans driveway not very far from my body shop, so I thought Id investigate. When I drove up I was shocked, because its a rare occasion to find a pre- 70 VW in this area. It was raining like hell but I stopped to talk to the man anyway. We spoke for about an hour standing in the rain and he told me all about how he purchased it brand new. Upon further inspection, the car was fairly solid. The body is awesome cept' for some surface rot but all in all the car is straight. The windows roll smooth, doors shut solid, and the seats adjust like new. The passengers side pan is fairly gone, as is the pass. heater channel but the drivers side floors and such are great! The OG interior is decent, the car has been bumped front and rear with the OG engine is in the rear as well! He asked if I would make an offer and I refused.... I hate offering anything  He then said that it had became an eyesore after all these years of neglect in his driveway and said $100 would take it home. The next day I arrived with $100, my freind Dennis, my trusty GMC Sonoma and towbar and Off we went! The day I got the car I spoke to the mans wife and it turns out that it had actually been her car all these years. She told me stories of cramming herself, 3 highschool kids, a trombone, a saxophone and their books all in the car, everyday. She looked almost in tears as I pulled out of the driveway and headed to the shop... But I promised the woman that the car was not going to be parted and that it would see the road again in a few short months! Shortly after we pulled out the car was really fighting the towbar. I was always told to reverse a few feet and try again if the car fights the towbar. It had never happend before but I tried backing up a bit. It didnt help so I volunteered to ride in the bug on the way home. It was great! except for the lack of brake/gas control and the out-of-round tires it was awesome! I quickly rolled my window down and stuck out my elbow cruisin toward home... I found several goodies in the glovebox after I looked about in the car..

A bunch of VW booklets and stuff. This car will see a restoration in the future but, seeing as I have my 72 torn apart I dont want to tear into another one just yet. I plan on getting all new brakes, tires, pass. side floor 1/2 , get the 40 horse running and off I will go. Im planning on driving it rat style until I have the time to fix it right. I have decided however that I will not do anything to this car that is irreversible. So for the purist in you, you can exhale now. But folks, that is the tale of my new 62!

Lucky, nice car for $100, good story too. I bought a 67 off of the original owners son who had owned it since day one. It was the same scenario. You don't see people getting that way over 4-door LTD's, or much else.

I hope you dont paint it. I would buff it out and represent that patina.

Thats the plan Im stickin' too. Im too busy making all of these rustbuckets I restore for a living slick, but I would rather enjoy mine in its OG glory.

Hoodrides arent peices.... If I haddnt accidentally ruined my hoodride stencil, it would already have it on there.

Good read. Good find. Congrats.

that is awesome nice find 8) here in my part of PA we don't get many vw's and if you do they are either rust buckets or expensive. My 74 was like $1500 and then i see all the people out west getting 60's for like less than a thousand dollars good condition. I am SOO Jealous.

Update folks. Fellow "Samba addict" Jarrett, my father and I pulled the car in the shop, jerked all the wheels off, changed oil, adj. valves... etc. and the 62 started right up. Took a while to crank ( its been sitting since 85') but when it finally did it runs like an SOB!! We thought it would maybe run shady but It runs GREAT, fantabulous, awesome! The three of us were almost amazed. Then we started on the brakes and had them working 1/2 way decent but I jerked the drums off and actually only 1 wheel cylinder is bad! It might not totally need them but tommorrow Im going to buy 4 wheel cyls, 8 brake shoes, harware kits, and the passengers pan 1/2. Even the rubber hoses look fine!!! This car is gonna be on the road in about 2 days max. Im starting to save for a narrowed adjuastable for the front and drop spindles.... One day. Just thought Id update you folks

Do yourself a favor and change the rubber brake lines. I have heard too many times where the lines looked good on the outside and were bad on the inside.

Also, I would go ahead and get a good German master cylinder. It sucks to change the wheel cylinders and pads only to have another issue.

An ounce of effort on the front end will be worth tons on the back end. Especially since the car has been sitting so long.

Can't wait to see it cleaned up, slammed and rollin'

EdW Wed Mar 02, 2005 8:56 am

Also, change your fuel lines!

Slowlow Wed Mar 02, 2005 7:56 pm

Yea, even if the hoses/ fuel lines look ok, they are still old. They will all be replaced. I have all new hardware inside the drums now and I plan on buying the rubber hoses and such a little further down the line. Im not in too big of a rush to drive it until I patch the passengers side floor and heat channel anyway. I guess for now I will just have to keep rydin my 70.

Slowlow Thu Mar 03, 2005 6:52 pm

Drove it today!! I finished the brakes up and just took it about a block down the road and came back. The passengers pan half is gone so I had to rig up the "battery tray" with plywood for a few minuites! It was pretty fun. The stock muffler has rotted off so I guess when I go buy the pan 1/2 Im gonna buy a new muffler as well.

Nice ride for $100.00. :D

In order to tow the older bugs without the steering dampner you need to tie the steering wheel in the neutral position. You'll go around a corner OK but it will not straighten out well all the time and you'll scrub the tires off in a few miles.

NEVER back up your bug while it's attached to the tow bar, Doesn't work. It's like trying to take a cat on a walk while attached to a leash. :?
