| Hola.... I'm currently putting in a 002 tranny into my Baja. I'm bolting it up to my stock 1600 SP motor until I get the $$ to upgrade the motor. When I bought the tranny it did not come with a starter. My question is, will the starter from my stock tranny work with this setup? If not, what starter should I get (part #)? In the future I plan on upgrading to a 1776 or 1835. Is there a starter I should be looking for now so I'm not upgrading later? |

| Just go to your local parts store and order a starter for a '68 autostick. Should be around $65 plus core. Doesn't use a bushing and is stronger than a stick shift type 1. Ol' John 8) |

the autostick starter is a better choice, but will the bug starter work?
i am in the same boat as 68Vert, 002 going in the baja and have the starter from a 73 bug trans i would rather use than pay money for something i dont technicaly need. |

| Regular bug starters work, but (I think) there are different depth bellhousings on the later bus trans...If so...not sure what years are diff. I know a 68-70 works just fine. 71 switched to super beetle style T/O bearing. |

| I would suggest a starter for a automatic bay window bus. They are physically bigger, and are self supporting, no bushing to worry about. I had mine in my car for about 5 years and no problems so far. Later,Mitch. |

The regular SR-15 should work too.
But I agree if you can get an SR-17 auto starter do that. |
