I have a new steering box on order to replace my "worn out-adjusted to the max-30 degrees of play" steering box. Can this be r&r'd with the front beam in place or do I need to remove the beam first?

Thank, Jonny

You can replace it without removing the beam.

Pulling the gas tank makes it alot easier, but is not neccesary.
pull the pitman arm off after you get the 2 tie rod ends off and re -install just prior to bolting up the new box.

One thing you might find is that your old steering box had two M10 mounting studs that came out of it, which the new box won't have. if this is the case, I've found that it's often easier to just buy and use the right length M10 bolts than to transfer the studs over.

Also, make sure that you have the steering box "centered" before you put your tie rods on. Start with the wheel turned all the way to the right and then go to the far left. Count the revolutions and come back half way. If it is out even half a turn, you will get a weird wandering feeling in your steering.
