View original topic: Replacing the battery every six months?

Hey, I have a 1974 Westy that is frying batteries every six months or so. I thought that a live wire was draining it but I don't think that is the problem. I have been told that the alternator might be overcharging it and frying it since when the battery is about to go out, there is some mad sulphur smell coming from the battery at that time. I have checked the volt output too. At idle the volts are around 13-14 volts but obviously, I can't check it while I am driving. Anyone have any suggestions on what might be going on? Thank for any help.

Take this thing to a shop capable of testing the output correctly even if it costs you some money to do so. I think you are overcharging as you drive.

I don't have a lot of confidence in the Auto Bone type places. I would go to a real alterntor/generator/starter rebuild shop where the guy who owns it is at least 50.

Over charging will fry the fluids out of it big time

sounds like an alt has an open circuit :(

The only thing that will cause a battery to overcharge, thus giving a sulfur smell, is a bad voltage regulator or an open in a wire leading to it.
