View original topic: Front Beam Question -Baja
DeMinimis Thu Mar 10, 2005 2:16 pm

Howdy folks:
Have a sandrail and currently restoring a '79 vert. After the vert, thinking I need a killer Baja for Baja. The question is, if I get a late standard with a ball joint front beam, what must I do to adapt the car/head for a L/K pin front beam? Can I even do it? Should I even do it? I'm repairing our sandrail every other day when we're in Baja, so this thing needs to be bomb proof and with loads of travel. That's why I want a L/K pin. Thanks.

Yes, how many flapjacks does the bunny eat a day?

Chewbacca Thu Mar 10, 2005 4:35 pm

bahahahahahaha!!!!

none. bunny died January 7, 2003

Oh great going Suntour, you just had to open that wound up again. I'm told one never really gets over a bunny's death (there's some humor there if you remember stories of the old "rabbit tests").

HamburgerBrad Thu Mar 10, 2005 5:31 pm

bunny wasn't mine. it belonged to some woman in Japan who was an avid photographer and rabbit lover

suntour Thu Mar 10, 2005 6:27 pm

Open mouth insert foot. That’s about the fifth time I have done that this week. Oops..

So those aren’t scaled down flapjacks, they must be some sort of Mochi. Oh it all makes sense now. The Japanese are just odd people. Really, really, odd….

Sorry to hear about the bunny. Is it possible to set up an avatar that picks a random image from a designated source? That way we could all see the entire bunny image library? I just love those bunny pictures.

Oh yeah back to the topic.. Anyone know if a K&L swap will fit in the wheel wells of a Thing without cutting the body up? I got a donor pan ready sitting in my yard waiting for the implants, umm.. swap… whatever…

new avatar. most of the pictures are titled "dorayaki" if that means anything?

T1 balljoint arms are damn near the same length as my old stock LP arms. i dont forsee you having any clearance issues

suntour Thu Mar 10, 2005 7:10 pm

It’s not the arm length I am worried about, it’s the tower width. From the diagrams I have seen the K&L towers go straight up but the ball joints tilt out. I am wondering if that will hit the inside of the wheel wells. That is one of the few undamaged, non-rusted places on my car. I hate to cut that up since it has done such a great job surviving a rather hard life.

I will ask my wife what “dorayaki” means. I don’t speak Japanese but she does.

i see what you're saying. i went and looked at my vert to check out the front beam. makes me wish i still had a stock link pin beam lying around to measure. maybe this conversion will call for a wider beam?

Anyone know somewhere where bunnies roam free in an open area? Ive got a hound dog with a serious hankering for rabbits. Id love to find somewhere to let him chase them to his hearts content. Big field, fenced, no traffic....anyone??

Oh yeah...VW content......Suntour you could do a LP beam in a Thing if it was wider than stock, say 6". You might not get the tallest towers on there, but it'll sure be taller than stock ball joint. Add a body lift, then you can really get some decent towers in there w/o cutting.

For whoever was asking, Ive got a cheap T4 engine. Its a core, needs rebuild, but its complete.

We got 20 billion of the bashtards here...

You're welcome if you want :D

Hey Mattt,

I am not totally sold on a body lift yet. I don’t mind the pre-runner fenders though. That would give me about 2” more inches of clearance and I wouldn’t think twice about trimming the hell out of some fiberglass fenders for wheel clearance. I also don’t mind the wheels sticking past the fenders so long as I don’t get harassed by the local authorities too often.

Hmm, I will think on this. Have about a month before the final decision is made. And I was looking for the Type IV engine. A core would be great. I will PM you about it.

Those are the Thing Shop duckboards. It only took them 6 months to show up after the order was placed. A little late since the engine crapped out about 4 months ago and it has barely moved since.

HbB, I asked my wife what dorayaki means. She just looked at me like I was a complete idiot and asked what the hell I was talking about. I tried to explain it and it turns out I was slaughtering the language again. Dorayaki is a manju which is Pancakes with anko filling. Basically it’s sugary bean stuff. (personally I think all Japanese desserts taste the same.) Anyway, next time I am in little Tokyo I will pick some up.

mattt, bring the dog to the chino hills state park in the spring. rabbits everywhere.

suntour, thats probably why it looks like the bunny always has two flapjacks on its head? bring some back for me  on topic: does anyone have a picture of a 181 with this setup? would it look funky with the tires sticking too far outside the fenders with the 6" over beam?

suntour Fri Mar 11, 2005 6:32 pm

This one (I am pretty sure it’s 6” could be 10” though) has a K&L convertion but I doubt fenders will fit.

This one has a 6” wider ball joint front end on it, owned by Bob Ingman.

I have a few other picts but I will have to keep looking.

Suntour - I managed to whack my RF prerunner fender last weekend even with a body lift....

May sanity visit you on all your adventures, otherwise, break out the fiberglass repair kit!

I just cut some more off (including the broken area)...
