Finished my 1957 OVAL Baja ragtop. Pics are in my gallery

We built our first Bajas in '69. A '63 bug and next ... a '59 Baja Ghia (talk about blasphemy!). This was in the days of plentiful donor (cheap) cars and no fiberglass kits (all modified steel parts). The Ghia had a unique snap-on canvas nose cover (early bra?) and weighed less than 1300 lbs. This peo'd the local police ... at that time any car less than 1500 lbs. wasn't required to have full coverage fenders. We had a copy of the certified scale slip and a typed copy of the Ca. vehicle code rule on board. 6volts, 40horse (bug), and 36horse (Ghia) ... they ran pretty good. We didn't know any better. Sorry ... no pics ... didn't know how to use a camera back then.

Oh! Oh!

That's just wrong.

That poor split on an IRS with wrong tail lights.

amen

vwracerdave Thu Jun 09, 2005 9:17 pm

No way of telling if that is a genuine split without seeing the rest of the bug. Could be a split rear window section welded into a late bug, or could be a fiberglass split window kit graphted into a late model bug.

True. Spekaing of those, where would ya find a fiberglass split conversion? I never could find one.

www.glass-action.com They should have a booth at the classic. Look for a yellow bug in the vendor area with this kit and mis-matched fenders.

Actually my 56 is sitting on the 72 IRS pan.

come on guys, we're the baja bug people here.
if you want to talk about an originality you're in the wrong forums.
maybe better go "Splitville" where all the hardcore split people hang out.

compare to the swing axle, IRS is way to go.

restored split people are strict with an originality but
believed we have a freedom of choice & can do what ever we want.
therefore, no such a thing as right and wrong.
I think putting $900.00 split taillights on the split baja is kind a waste
and defeat the purpose.

SHMO Fri Jun 10, 2005 10:05 am

Personally,

I would cut the top off that car anyway, and run aftermarket tailights....lol
