I'm thinking about baja-ing my '58 ragtop shell. I always thought I would build a fast street car out of it but these posts inspire me to CUT IT!!

I VERY seriously doubt that car of Gary Emory was the 1st Baja Bug!
It WAS included in the 1970 HP Books "Baja Prepping VW Sedans and Dune Buggies". This was the forerunner of the nearly 30 year old HP book by Jeff Hibbard you all are familiar with. Emory's car got a full page of photos.
That car was very probably the prettiest of the pre-fiberglass Bajas. The HP book also included photos of the then new Miller-Havens fiberglass Baja kit.
I also doubt very seriously that it was used offroad without shocks except on dunes. That was popular until the 90s. I STILL see buggies with aluminum beams with no shock towers. |

| I have that same book. Mine must be a later printing. The price on my copy is a whopping $5.95. |

That guy it now the guy who makes the Mojave body that Moore Parts sells. His name is Richard.
Richard and his buddy designed the Mojave and made the mold.
I think they go buy the name of Orange County Buggies, I believe he still has the molds but they need alittle work, I'm also interested in a set, maybe if enough people want a set you could get him to make another run of those "table top fenders". |

That Corvair conversion kit was made by Hadley Engineering back in the '70's. I spoke to the guy at Hadley Engineering back in the mid-'90's about the kit when he walked into a VW shop I worked in at the time.
He was surprised that anyone still knew about the kit. He said they shipped tons of the kits all over the country back then.
At the time I spoke to him, his company specialized in converting Jaguars to Chevy power and the Trans-Vair kits were long gone. |

| I need another VW like another hole in my head, but I had to check out that oval on Craigslist today. Its not a real ragtop, and the Corvair drivetrain is very unappealing to me, but the metal work on the front and the firewall was really well done and has stood the test of time. All metal except rear fenders. It needs a LOT of work to be put back on the road but you'd sure be one of a kind... |

the only thing worse than cutting an oval is cutting one and letting it rot away parked somewhere. |

Where were you a month ago when I was trying to give away a perfectly good 65 sun roof body? |

65? That's way too new. It's gotta be an oval or a split. :D |
