View original topic: Sand Rail Wiper motor install??
route62 Fri Mar 11, 2005 4:39 pm

I am converting a sand rail to make it street legal and since it has a plastic windshield I will need to install a wiper motor, arm and blade. Ive seen universal type motors for jeeps that just need one hole to mount. Is this the best way, drill a hole in the plastic windshield and install or are there other options?

I do not want to weld a tab to hold the motor since the rail has a nice paint job. Thanks in advance for your help.

sounds like bad mojo to me. from what i understand the wipers are going to scratch the crap out of the plastic windshield, people have complained of scratching plastic just wiping it down with a rag.

be sure to check out your local laws on that windshield, i am sure HBB posted the cali DMV info that you have to run the approved safety glass in order to go street legal....but thats cali

dont mean to rain on your parade or come off like this is gospel truth, just bringing up those points in case you hadnt considerd them.

definitely check your local laws regarding material. there's nothing in california that states it has to be a powered wiper motor. mine is just the wiper out of an 80something chevy truck shortened to work, then i welded a handle on the back. after all, how often are you going to drive a rail in the rain?

how about a manual one? The rail we had years ago just had a manual one on it. It consisted of a blade on one side and a handle on the other. Of course this was here in FL and you can get away with murder. I'd be worried that a motor etc.. only attached to the plastic windsheild might cause problems with the vibrations/bounceing that a saindrail is gonna see.

You may be on to something with the manual wiper. I am in Florida, mdetro4660 and I know what you mean! I think I am going to try the manual route. Do you know of any other weird laws I would need to know for street legal rails in Florida mdetro4660?
