I have a Baja and I was wondering if it was a good idea or a bad idea to run hose off the carbs through the firewall and mount the aircleaners in side. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks, Jerry

I haven't done it, but if you look in Jeff Hibbard's book Baja Bugs and Buggys it was very common on race cars.

The upside is your filter is out of the heavy dust if you play in dusty areas.

The downside is you will have a hole in your firewall so noise (and fire) can get inside the passenger compartment easier. A small advantage is you would hear backfires through the carb easier however.

I would say if your Baja is strictly an offroader only, no street driving, gutted interior, do whatever sounds cool like installing a remote air filter. If you do have license plates on it and drive on the street, and if you have noise insulation on your firewall area, I wouldn't do that kind of mod. JMHO

Another downside is the length of pipe from cleaner to carb will be more restrictive than a cleaner mounted right above the carb.
Better than grinding an engine to mush tho.

It's way noisey and smelly. Tried it when I was a kid, think it lasted less than a week.

has anyone tried to mount one of those big a** filters off an mid 80's oldmobile (or something) off the fire wall? you would keep the hose short and have the filter outside the passenger compartment and still get the bennefits of a great big ol paper filter. all you would need to do is fab up some kind of bracket to hang it from and make sure that bad boy didnt rattle its way loose in the whoops. might be a little ugly and unstylish but then again who cares? a clean engine that breaths well and dosent stink up the car is way better than looking cool in my book.

think i may just have to look into this.....

i use a k&n filter that mounts directly to my carb. i ordered it from jesse james at autozone. on it i have a foam filter about 3/8" thick. on the outside of it, i have a piece of mrs. bajaherbies pantyhose...... ain't no dirt or sand getting in my engine.
