Is it safe to take off the heater flap/connectors from the heater exchangers? I took mine off b/c i live in florida and I don't think I'll be using it.
Also, I have the 'rm-182' fridge and I got it working on the propane, my question is, should I hear a fan blowing in the back or should it be quiet? For some reason I feel that a fan should be back there cooling the thing.
Thanks, purdman.
ps. How do you check for vacuum leaks in the FI system? |

Put those flaps back on there, I am not sure which ones you are talking about but they should all be there.
To me there are 2 kinds of vacuum:
1) Vacuum going to the engine and 2) vacuum not going to the engine like the one going to the power brake booster or servo.
Engine vacuum leaks can usually be found by spraying Gum Out carb cleaner (or the equiv) with the engine idling at the seals for the vacuum hoses, the hoses themselves, and the seals for the engine. That includes the "S Boot" that goes from the AFC unit to the thottle body. Once it sucks in that "free" source of hydrocarbons, the engine will increase in idle. If you have a idle stabilizer unit on your you may have to by pass it to get it out of the loop. Don't forget to look at the intake manifold runner hoses, the seal between the throttle body and the air plenum, around the cold start valve, and the aux air regulator. BTW, investing in a cheapie vacuum gauge will let you figure out if you are making progress and "zeroing out your hydraulic lifters" will also increase your engine vacuum.
Here is a link to ratwells site on vacuum hoses http://www.ratwell.com/technical/VacuumHoses.html not exactly the same as a vanagon, but it does get close. Cheap money to just replace all of those hoses one at a time. I get my vacuum hoses from the bus depot.
Maybe somebody with a vanagon could do some similar measurements and post them on the samba? Might be another website that has that info, but I don't know where it is. Could be really helpful.
The other vacuum that runs the power brakes servo, just has to be leakfree, with no kinkiness, and with a GOOD check valve. Gun Out won't work on that one, because it is not going to the engine for combustion. |

| there is a kit to by pass the heat exchangers , also the fridge should have the fan on for the fridge.the fan is for the heater coils . it's a complicated system . there should be a light hum . nothing else of noise . you can get a lot of info for the fridge on the vanagon.com site and the westiphia owners site. good luck |
