I recently purchased a '91 Carat. After running it for a few minutes, I get a loud "Bonk" when the fuel tank creates a vacuum and sucks the bottom of the tank up 1/4". After shutting the van off, as air gradually returns to the tank, the tank drops and creates another loud "bonk". I have decided to name the van Bonky after this. Anyway, I know that this is what is happening because if I run the van without the cap, no bonk.
So the question is, is the cap supposed to be vented or is it the tank somehow? How can I fix this unique situation? Any comments would be helpful. Bonky thanks all of you.

No, the cap is not vented.
You need to address the problem you have with the evaporative emission system. i.e. the charcoal cannister and purge valve etc. |

Was the tank ever dented at one time?
I could imagine some moron jacking up the van at the tank, and then ...
I like Bonky.
At least you know its sealed well. :) |

| Hmmm. I guess I wasn't aware of a charcoal canister or purge valve. Geez, I really need to get a Bentley manual. Thanks! |
