If that is real there were only like some stupid shit like 8 made only 4 known to exist or some crazy shit like that, I'm sure Ev or someone will school us with real numbers.

Damn, T34's are ugly in a convertable. I'm glad that those weren't ever produced.

There's a very slight chance that this could indeed be a real 34 Cabrio. I've heard from several people "in the know" with factory connections... including Knute and Kjell Qvale as well as a friend in Roseburg by the name of Helmut Becker who was a parts specialist trained in Wolfsburg in the early 1960s that several of these 34 Cabriolet "prototypes" were manufactured, and a handful were actually sold to well- to- do European wealthy and celebrity clients before the safety issues came to light. VW got most of them back, but a few owners wouldn't cooperate, so the story goes.
It's just strange how I've heard this EXACT SAME story from the Qvales in Sun Valley years ago, and Becker popped up with the exact same story when he saw my Type 34 late last year. I never ASKED any of these folks about it- it was just something that came up in conversation.

Is it true? I don't know. But all three of these guys were "there" in the VW heirarchy during that time and certainly in a position to know.
IF this is indeed one of the ones that got away, it's worth every euro and then some. But, that's a BIG "If". If it's a conversion, it's a damn nice one, but this seller is saying it's a factory original.

This sellers' version of events is basically the same, except that THIS one seems to have been "secretly" hidden away by a dealer. I don't know if I'm buying that, but it's POSSIBLE.

If it's one of the six that got away it would be one hell of a car to own.

It's real.

From the Type 34 list:
Quote: He had it restored with NOS panels and it is indeed beautiful. In 2000 Thomas mentioned that it may be for sale at DM50,000 ($25K). And it hasn't been seen since 2000. It's definitely the nicest authentic 341 of the four known existing worldwide.

341 = Type 34 Convertible model # of course...

if it would have been built on sept. 1, 1964, I'd bid.

Notched Tue Mar 22, 2005 11:25 am

I think only VWoA could afford this. Or, Jerry Seinfeld.

Man. I wish I had some cash. Think my wife would notice if my 401K dropped by 50K? "Ya honey, stock market took a turn for the worst. But look on the bright side, I picked up this VW for a song!"

I've seen the red Notch convertible in person, and the craftsmanship on these cars is outstanding.

I wonder why he's auctioning it on the US eBay, and the description is in German? Kinda odd.

Check out the category. It actually is eBay germany. Look at it under this url:

Notice you can't browse the catetory under the ebay.com listing, but you can under the ebay.de listing.

Maybe Jay Leno will buy it. He has all the rare cars. :)

Tina (my 1971 Notch) has some serious holes.
I had to put a plank of wood under the battery to stop it falling out.

60DoubleTurd Wed Mar 23, 2005 4:27 pm

I have some floor near my holes. Not much to call floor when its going by @ 60 MPH.

roy kohrogi Wed Mar 23, 2005 5:45 pm

Type 341 convertible is my dream car for such a long time.
too bad only dozen of them was ever produced as prototype.

we called type 341 as "porsche VW" because of much better style
than anyother VW ever produced & most expensive air cooled VW.
