View original topic: Synchro - Front wheels not engaging.

A friend of mine has a 85 Synchro that the front wheels have quit engaging when they should. He is not his own mechanic and hasn't wanted to spend the money to get it checked out.

I told I'd help him try to figure out what it may take to fix it.

Did a little searching and my main question is - How can you tell if you have a bad VC or if it is the differential.

As far as I know he doesn't have the locking diff option.

Always been interested in the synchros and may pick one up someday so it will be a good learning experience for me.

:D Find a nice flat street or parking lot.... get a nice big jack with nice wheels on it... jack up the back of the van just high enough to get the wheels off the ground... get in, put it in low and slowly engage the clutch... if the coupler works, the van should move foreward.... make sure the jack is going straight in from the back so the van doesn't get sideways... you only need to move a couple of inches, if the rear wheels just spin, it's broke, if you move ,it works...

:D also... VC is in front housing with diff.. if the front wheel are not engaging at all, then the VC is responsible..... if the diferential is bad, it would still engage, but it would probably make some prety cool noises...

I'm thinking it must be the VC, no wierd noises he said it just quit working.

I'm guessing that is a fairly expensive part.
