I have a VW based rail with what I believe is a single port 1600, 009 dist with 002 trans. I have only owned this for a couple months and it is also my first VW engine I have owned.
The engine only seems to run well as soon as it is started up and cold. Then after it warms up it beings to sputter and hesitate when applying the throttle. I have found information on adjusting the vavles and I'm going to do this tonight but what other steps should I take in resloving my situation?
Thanks, |

| If its a rail remove the choke. You dont need a choke...If you have to have it, Make sure it is working. |

I don't even need a choke? Why is that? And how is it removed? Just remove the electrical wires or linkage/leverage?

| See if the choke is working first, take the air filter off , when the choke is cold (BEFORE TURNING ON POWER) the butterfly valve on the top of the carb will be shut, Turn on the ignition switch, (YOU DONT HAVE TO START IT) after a few minutes with the power on the butterfly valve will open all the way, If its working correcly, Check that before you start tearing your carb apart, There is some notches on the choke element (WHERE THE WIRE CONNECTS) make sure they are lined up with the notches, I found my motor runs a lot better without a choke at least in the desert, cause when you are hittin the whoops the choke valve (butterfly valve) is constantly movin around, I havnt had a choke for a long time but you have to know what to take off and what to plug so check that stuff first, If you dont know what you are doing I would find someone who does!!!! |

Is this a single solex? Do you still have the heat riser hooked up? Is the riser plugged? Plugged heat risers can lead to poor running after the choke shuts off.
And then lets start on the 009... Quote: sputter and hesitate when applying the throttle . |

Yes. Single Solex carb. 30/31PICT with 125 main.
And I have made a mistake in my first post. It is actually a dual port not a single port. I have no idea if that is going to make much of a difference.
Heat riser?? You have to bear with me because this is the first VW air colled engine I have owned. But is the heat riser located between the carb and intake that has a male spade electrical connection to it on the left side of the carb?
I have begun trying to locate a vacuum leak but have come up with nothing.
Also I have what I believe is the CDI igition (two wires coming from the 009). I have heard that the plugs need to be gapped larger then normal points type distributors. Is that correct? |

The heat riser is a small tube that runs under the horizontal portion of the intake manifold. It bolts to the muffler/header on each side next to #'s 2 and 4. It is supposed to heat the fuel/air mixture to help keep it atomized, and make the engine run better. Yours may or may not have the heat riser connected to the exhaust, or the rise tube may be clogged with carbon (very common problem). In either case the result can be sluggish acceleration and/or poor idle.
And

Nope that is the electric shut off solenoid.
In re: the 009, do a search on the Baywindow bus forum and see what I am talking about. |
