View original topic: Broke down & needing advice

I'm an aircooled guy myself, so bear with me. My friend was traveling in his vanagon when it died on him. Very cold weather and at night, so he got towed to where he was staying. Kept trying to start the vanagon, to no avail. Checked the coil-Bad. Replaced coil and spark plugs and the vanagon starts. Here's the problem: Now that it's running, it is blowing oil out of the exhaust, and he says you can also smell gas in the exhaust. I told him that he probably washed all of the oil off of the cylinder walls with the gas while trying to start it with a bad ignition system and got some ring wear. (The old spark plugs were fouled because of this). The vanagon has run about an hour since the coil and plugs were replaced, however, the smoke in the exhaust has not gotten better. He needs to travel about 10 hours to make it home. I told him he should probably change the oil and also perform a compression test before leaving on the trip.
Anyone have any advice or thoughts on this that I can relay to my friend?

What year is it, and how long was he cranking the engine without it starting? he could have fuel in the oil. how much oil is coming out the exhaust and is he sure it's oil.

Check the fuel pressure both with and with out the vacuum connection to the regulator.

-BINGO

He drained the oil and said it had a good deal of gasoline in it. Must have been cranking it over a whole lot with that bad coil. He said that after changing the oil it stopped smoking, however, the hydraulic lifters were making a lot more noise. Hopefully they will pump up and quieten down. Hope that little incident didn't put too much wear on the rings & cylinder walls, etc. He should be able to make it on home now.
Thanks.

Might want to "zero out " those hydraulic lifters since it takes only a few minutes to do.
