I have a pair (front and rear) old Cali license platse, the black and yellow ones. Any Californians know how/if i can register my 63 and use these plates? One suggestion i got was to apply for "personalized plates", using the old plates number and use the black and yellows instead of the new ones i get.

What you have is what is commonly referred to as a "CA Black Plate".

No matter how old your car is, if it's been on the road continuosly and registered, it will have a Black Plate. Therefore, IMO, it is correct for an early car.

To answer your question, as Crofty said, no you can't use it, unless you can prove it belongs to a certain car by using old registrations, and the car hasn't had another plate assigned.

The last year eligible for YOM plates is 1962
California does not allow any currently used plates to be reassigned to a car. You can however, use plates from before the switch to black plates, and assign them as a Year of Manufacture plate (YOM). For that to occur you need a set of plates with a clear number for the time your car was produced, and the corresponding year sticker or metal tag.

Don't hold your breath for the Black Plate to be put in the YOM system.

That won't work either. The DMV computer will recognize the 3-letters/3-numbers format and won't allow you to order them. I've tried :(

i got my car registered with them 2 years ago 8) . try saying your car is a frame off resto and you want the plates for your car to be correct. if that wont work, i dont know what else will.
