I want to buy a after market gas tank. I was lookin into the alumium spun gas tanks and the price scared me away, I saw a ABS PLASTIC FUEL TANK. and was wondering if any one here has any experience with these tanks? Or should I save my pennies and wait to buy a aluminum gas tank? I dont care about looks, and its goin to a 61 bug. thanks

I have a one piece fiberglass front end. I have a stock gas tank right now, but the way I have it set up, at the race track they wont let me race. Im running a turbo system and I want a shut off valve for my gas tank also. It will just be easier to put a spun gas tank that do all this welding for a stock gas tank.

I was gonna suggest a fuel cell but the price of those would scare you more.. I recommend it for safety..

Your probably better off getting the spun aluminum tank if your not concerned with looks or a guage, I would not trust those plastic ones, I have seen them and they feel real cheap and thin unless its mounted somewhere where it cannot get damaged. I am in the process of saving up for a jaz fuel cell and remote fill kit.

the price for an alumimun gas tank runs around 130, how much does a fuel cell run for?

A fuel cell runs between $100 for a 3 gal fuel cell up to $250 for a 22 gal fuel cell. If you are going to drag race your car I would suggest looking at an NHRA rulebook before you buy anything. There are some very strict rules reguarding gas tanks.

its not serious drag racing, Just here on thursday nights at my local dragstrip, they open the strip. All I need to do, is to make it look safe,The way I have my gas tank set up right now, wont pass.

Where can you get a 22 gal fuel cel for $250? The best I've seen is about $600+.

hethen57,
I thought the same thing. I am always confused about the "fuel tank", "fuel cell" wording. My understanding was "fuel cells" have a flexible bladder inside so that even if the tank is dented or ruptured the fuel will stay inside where it's safe. Either way, one of those Jegs tanks should work for the application.
I still vote for a stock setup however considering price. That is unless you have specific fuel needs that a stock tank can't supply.

Will a stock style tank and its fuel gauge pickup survive in off road usage? Ive always been pushed away from stock tanks because they conflict with front end susp, and rack and pinion setups. Is there a way to make a stock tank work with all that up front?

It's pretty tough to make one work with a rack and pinion setup.
As far as holding up they seem to do fine.

vwracerdave:
Thanks for the link. I guess it pays to shop around.... They had what appeared to be the same steel, gel filled, fuel cell that I had seen at other places for $600+....for $252. Excellent! |

I've been using a poly tank in my baja for about 3 years. No problems so far. I'm using the translusent/clear color so no need for fuel gauge
Its mounted inside by the fire wall. |

The fuel cells also have roll over protection, They have check valves for the fill spout and overflow vent So the gas can not spill if tipped over..

The fuel cell I am looking to get is a 16 gallon jaz for about 189$ and then I have to get the remote fuel fill kit, that is 89$ and then few other things. The fuel cells have foam inside them to keep the fuel from sloshing around and I think you can use them without the foam. Heres a link to jaz.

I run a poly and it works fine, lighter, less expensive as well. If you were to crash with one i would feel pretty safe.
