Ok, I post this knowing full well its a BIG F.N.G. Newbie question. I am prepared for any and all flames in response and I appologize if this question has been asked before.
Can someone please explain the Baja Car Classes?
In another post I was advised to buy Bilstien shocks valved for Class 11.
I've seen bolt in roll cages classed for several different classes.
It's a mystery to me and I can't seem to find the info I want on Google.
There are lots of great trails here in New Mexico and I cant wait to get out there!

What a dumb question "nooob". Get lost!
Hahaha ok, I won't flame on you, as you put it. Rather than explaining all the ins and outs of each class, every sanctioning body has their own by the way, I will brush over the most common ones and there basic attributes.
Class 11 CAR: More or less stock VW. This is the reason someone recommended the shocks. This class utilizes stock shock mounts and suspension, same as your bug. They are allowed to raise the suspension, but they need to retain stock fenders and bumpers.
Class 5-1600: This is the true baja bug class in my opinion. Suspensions are highly modified with longer travel and bullet-proof parts. The roll cages in these cars incorporate shock mounts and tie together the front and rear suspensions. Motors are limited to 1600cc
Class 5 unlimited: Pretty much the full boogie class. Extended wheelbases up to 105 inches with long travel suspension and full tubular chassis, Motors are still limited to aircooled VW type, but are allowed to be built to any level of size and performance.

you most likely arent going to build to any class. but if you were interested, the only way to find out EXACTLY what a class requires, you would need to get a rule book.
as far as seeing bolt in cages for different classes, you would only see it for the class 11. most class 5 cars are very high budget in which people have complete, custom, end to end cages fabricated |

Thanks!
I'm just looking to build something that I can terrorize my wife with and drive to work on occasion.
I found out that I can't take the back trails to work, there's a radioactive waste landfill in my path

| be the first to put a geiger counter in a baja, you might even be able to earn some extra income checking back trails and the desert for radiation. |

Why not take the back roads? Afterall, radioactive waste is an excellent way to achieve super human strength and a keen sense of public virtue, or was that just in the movies..hmmm
