Even without a stock carb, it's worth a try.

Quote: I honestly think vwclass11 is the exception to the rule here. Even stock cars don't usually achieve such exceptional mileage. However, he sounds like he is running a fairly anemic setup. Suprisingly, the air cooled VW isn't as much of a fuel miser as some would like to think.

I cant agree with you more. This engine has been amazing. I built it in 1993, c/w crank, balanced rods, balanced pistons, everything was new. My last trip I took to Yuma about 180 miles, I used 6.5 gallons, about 70 mph all the way. I drive this car daily, about 5 miles a day, woohoo. I use the stock tank, I usually fill up about every 3 weeks. I generally drive the speed limit. I just rebuilt the carb last week for no other reason than it has been a few years since the last rebuild. My engine has about 160-170,000 miles. Although off-road mileage dips down to about 15 mpg for obvious reasons. Later,Mitch.
