| my friend found a 1970 square that has the earlier style guages in it. will they work in my later 1972 square that has the black faces with small numbers? |

Starting with the 71 model year, the gauges used a shorter spring clip to hold them in the dash. So you will have to either reposition the spring clip, or get some of the older longer clips. Check out page 44 in the Electrical section of the Bentley manual.
I wanted the black-faced gauges in my 70 Squareback, so I got a set of the longer clips, and then the gauges fit fine. I had to carefully pry open the thing that olds the clips, and replaced them with clips from older gauges.
