I've been running a '62 baja w/ SA tranny for a while now and finally entered the local missouri mudslingers mudrun. I entered as the only two wheeled drive in the class B division (<33" tires) and was laughed up to the line. Then I hit it and made it farther than most of the big 4X4's, I think only 2 guys actually beat me. They were all running the same line and getting stuck at the same spot. I ran in between their tracks and stayed out of the ruts to hit the main mud hole. I currently have crappy little street tires on 14" rims on the front and 31's on the rear with plenty of clearance. Later runs proved that the front tires were killing me because there was no control of the steering.
??'s
-where is a good site that will show me how to raise the front and rear?
-What is a good tire (tractor like) that I could slap on after driving to the run? I plan on buying a set of 15" rims, but what width??
What a feeling and you should have heard the croud. The owner came up to me later and said I was the only one with a shot at making it due to the bug not sinking. He said "you just have to find a way to control that front end". Oh yeah, I was the only one that drove to the run and didn't trailer it.

Nice job chuckie,
did you get any pics?
There is alot of info on raising the front end. Do a search. A good choice for tires might be some 7.00x15's. They are fairly tall and generally pretty agressive. They are also street legal so you can run them to and from the course.

damn i wish i had been there to cheer you on, i lived in central arkansas for 4 yrs and can definately imagine the grief those guys gave you.
probably right up till you out did them
the fact that you drove your car to the event is just icing on the cake.
the tires you are going to find are most probably going to be 15inch. the good news there is that a lot of the 4x4 guys are switching to a 16inch rim so tire prices should be in your favor.
look into the skinny, agressive tires a lot of desert guys run up front.
read the sticky thread on front suspension to get you rolling as far as the lift is concerned.
please, please see if you can get ahold of any on-line video of the events you participate in. i would love to see it.
also head over to vwbaja.net and ask the same questions there, one of the big players on that site has been involved in mud bogs and did pretty well from what i remember. talk to DRoZ or Insayne, these guys know what they are doing in the mud and muck.
good luck man. |

I have a good video of the first run, but it is over 15 meg and I don't know where to put it. It was such a rush. I don't remember most of it. Just the revving of the engine, and making sure I caught 2nd instead of reverse.......hmmm, maybe I should think about one of those shifters....are they pretty good?
Also, I was talking to the friend that conned me into running (he that guy that everyone comes to see at these things) and he recommend a tire that will act like an ice skate. He said these 3 ribbed tractor tires would work the best. They would raise the front end and I would only have to turn the wheel a little to get alot of turn.
