So I am replacing 2 fuel injectors on my 83 aircooled westy due to bad fuel line going into them. Question is: do I need to replace all 4 at the same time of can I only do 2 now? ($$$)

Always nice to have a set of injector seals in your toolbox should anyone start to leak out in the willywags.

I always "double clamp" the fuel lines that go from the fuel rail to the injector. Both ends.

Double clamp- so one would also go around the hose at the fuel injector? Good advice.

Well, I'm replacing my fuel lines and that's actually how I got into this mess. I didn't realize the fuel injector hose was permanently attached to the fuel injector and I cut one end a little to slip it off :(

If you are careful when you slit the hose, just a new hose about 35mm long can go right on there.

I don't know if they ever really come off that barb or if I am just paranoid. I always double clamp them with the good clamps like the #15...

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean that people really aren't out to get you.

Really? So I can take my old fuel injectors and just slip a new hose over those barbs? Is that what holds it on- barbs? Man that would save me some precious cash right now...

Sure. That is what hold them in there.

I like to shorten the right side ones to about 30mm as it is easier to get the engine in/out with it snugged up a bit.

Replace all of those hoses while you are doing it. Make sure you are using the 7mm FI hose (as sometimes they will sell you the non-FI hose).

When you are all done, check the fuel pump pressure you are putting out as per your Bentley manual.

Sweet- thanks a ton! So I just cut (carefully) the old fuel lines off the injectors and slip the new ones on with clamps?

Might want to go to www.type2.com go into "the library" go to "fuel injection" and then

Complete Fuel Line Replacement, '75-'79 Bus by Billy Price

That is for a bus but yours is similar. You aren' t doing all of that just the rail lines.

This might be a good time to get your injectors rebuilt. Figure $25 per injector, they will likely be as good as new, and you will get new short hoses clamped on to the injector, to boot (with the OEM style clamp). There are lots of these services around, and it is probably a good idea on a 22 year old vehicle :-). When i had mine cleaned (only 1 year newer than yours), they went from being 8% different flow rate to essentially exactly the same flow rate. Good for the engine.

Otherwise, yes, you can just slip on new hose and clamp it. I have heard this is an inferior clamping method to the OEM style, though.
