If you keep your motor tuned and timed I would guess between 25 and 30 I'm running a 1500sp and got 27 on my last tank

There are way to many factors to account for to give you an accurate mpg rating. Many things change your mpg such as tire size, road condition, vehicle weight, temperture, spark plug gap, and about 100 other things. I would guess that if you are driving typicaly on flat land at around 55mph in 68 degree weather with no wind you should get around 28 to 32 mpg. But thats the beauty of a guess, its always just a guess

with a 34pict-3 about 10 miles per month. try a 30pict-1 and get 28-29 miles per gallon.

Is the Pict 34 or 30 noted on the carb? If so, where?

The carb designation is on the left side of the carb, on the center of the "bowl" below the fuel inlet hose.

A 34 series won't fit a 1300 manifold without an adapter, and that would be a complete waste of time anyway, the small manifold was designed with a 30 series carb in mind, and like Bill hinted at, the 30PICT-1 is the best of those carbs. Also, if this truly is an unaltered original 1300, it will have cylinder heads with smaller valves in them than the 1500 and later engines, and then definately a 34PICT would be a waste on there.

I run a 30PICT-1 on my "40HP" engine, which is big-bored to 1385cc, 100cc larger than the actual size of a "1300" engine. I just got back from a long road trip - Colorado to Toronto, then to the show in Ypsilanti, then back to Wyoming. I got 31-33MPG most of the time. The one time I did try to go as fast as possible on the interstate I got just under 30MPG. The best I got was 34 and 35MPG. If it was winter I'd probably get about 2 or 3MPG worse. In town I get around 25-30, less in the winter.

yep 1300 has same valve size as newer FI beetle. smaller than 1500/1600 carb heads.
