i am curious as to why of all the Westies listed in the classifieds - there are only 3 1983 Westfalias - how come so few? coincidence? they are liquid cooled correct?

im looking at purchasing one tomorrow - at the price hes asking $2900 i could still put in some money and have a fit van- other than visual idicators, ie oil/head gasket leak - what other things can i tell upon a test drive/start up?

thanks - this is a very useful forum - ive leared alot in the past few weeks.'

Aloha

Early '83s were air cooled, late '83s were watercooled.

Don't forget the diesel.

So I recently purchased an 83 aircooled westy and I love it. The body and interior were in great shape but the engine needed a little work. Look the engine up and down- look for any holes in the exhaust (especially in the crossover pipe at the 180 degree turn). Look for any big leaks. When you drive it, see how much play the clutch has. As far as everything else goes- check out everything in the interior and see if all works and looks good. Good luck!

be aware of any little noises. the transmission shifting hard or you needing to force it in any way. after the test drive let it run and go to the back and with a long screwdriver place it on the head or manifold and hold your ear to the other end and listen to the valves. this has saved me a lot of money.
