I see the correct fuel filter listed for this as a round metal canister type filter, but the Van presently has a square plastic filter 13mm input and output. Which is the CORRECT filter?

How did the van run with the plastic one before it clogged? The busDepot catalog lists the plastic one as Part # 133133511 (1975-1986) But on the other hand, it also lists the metal one as Part #71028 (1984-1991). Hmm... If it ran good with the plastic one I would stick with that. Oh yea the metal one goes on the output side of the fuel pump per the catalog.

the square plastic is the one that I used on my '78 Bus. It has a large output and a small input, not an input and output of the same size like the one I pulled off the Vanagon.

If this plastic filter has the same diam. input and output then maybe it is the incorrect one. I do know that the metal filter has identical input and output Diam. (Approx. 1/4") However, All do respect to weinerwagen but I'd advise you not to just through any old filter on. I experienced some fuel injection gremlins a while back. The one thing I learned was that these FI systems can be very temperamental if you don't use the specified components. Your fuel delivery must be just so for the engine to run smoothly. You really should get the correct filter. Try posting this matter on the Bentley forum. Maybe they can help. Here's the link:
