Hi, I have a 86 Vanagon, and it is oil-change time.
What is the Best oil to use? How Much!

Thanks,

Ohhh boy......

You know what they say about opinions.

There have been many oil threads on here and I am sure fist fights have ensued over the subject.
Just use whatever you want.
Get 5 quarts and you'll have some extra when you have to top it off in a couple thousand miles.

Use Mann or Maule filters. Don't substitute here.

Try this thing out.

I use 20/50 in all my lower mileage waterboxers, with 30 w in the air cooled. Filters are whatever Pepboys or Kragen has on sale,,,,,Fram? Penns,,,,even high dollar stuff like KN has a air filter...

I change the oil so often I guess its a moot point on whether a MANN or others are worth the extra cash...

Hunt
I have a 91 vanagon gl
I change the oil every 2000 mi and 'always" use German Mann oil filters.
I have 25,000 mi on a complete rebuild and when I change oil it is just barely changing color.
You don't want to let the oil turn black before you change it.
Why, you say?
Because the black is carbon dust, blowby that your filter is nolonger picking up .
Another way of putting it, when it turns black yout oil turns into liquid sandpaper.
I used to have a sign in my shop, it read: Change your oil or change your motor.
