My fiancé and I just picked up our recently purchased 87 Westy in Florida and drove it up to Pennsylvania. It's an automatic with only 27,000 original miles on it--no joke! It has been babied for the past 18 years: stored indoors, driven infrequently, no accidents. It drives smoothly and is in beautiful condition with a few dings resulting from the previous (and original!) owner's--two older women who apparently weren't that into driving. Their mechanics--who sold it to us--said these ladies brought it in every three months for as long as they knew them regardless of whether or not the mileage even changed! The only snafu is the fridge but I haven't yet had a chance to explore what is going on there.

I just thought you all would be interested to know that this little treasure exists--not trying to brag...much \:D/ [/img]

Yeah, there was still plastic coating on the heat shield/dish drainer and some of the curtains and the fridge shelving were still sealed in their original plastic bags! I don't think the LP tank had ever been filled--the mechanic said the ladies were afraid they'd blow themselves up. The pop-up canvas could have been growing mildew but looks great. The rubber around the pop-up is slightly unstuck in a few places. Absolutely no rust. I can't wait to get to know it better. I sure with that fridge fired right up...

OK....can I ask the 64,000 dollar question? Tell me to mind my own business....what did it set you back?

Not quite $64,000. Without getting too specific, let's just say that we got what we paid for. We paid less than the refurbished beauties at pop-top heaven and not much more than what people were asking for similar year rigs with 120K and up in the classifieds. We decided we would rather pay for unused rather than refurbished and so far we don't regret it. And I love the auto transmission (thanks, Weiny, for the opinion a few months ago). It was a champ on the Blue Ridge Parkway! I plan on babying this thing from the start--or close to the start, anyway.

Yup, 3 speed. Now that you mention it, it did seem to like 4000 cruising down the highway. D2 was a champ on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Max MPG was 19, both doing 45 in D2 on the Parkway and 70 down the highway. Put some new Conti Vancos on and will soon explore stereo/speaker options. Anybody have a favorite way to run an iPod through a car stereo (e.g., iTrip, the tape with the wire like an CD walkman, etc.)?

Anyway, we couldn't be happier. See y'all on the road this summer--if you're going to Nova Scotia! \:D/

How about some pix?

I just added a bunch of photos to the 68+Campers gallery and I think you can get to them by clicking on the gallery link under my posts. Say, how do I get one of those pictures to appear under my name (avatar?) when I post?

grunwin Thu Jun 02, 2005 8:40 pm

I figured out how to add the avatar but all my photos are too big #-o

Very nice. You can use MSPaint to make an avatar, use stretch/skew.
