So I have a 59 356 coupe. My dad used to tell me about another engine(other than VW) that would bolt right in. 912, or 914 I can't remember and he is not around to ask any longer.
I question the feasibility of re bulding the old engine. From what he told me he had put in roller rods and crank? but the oil pump could not keep up and smoked them, fresh top end and good case. also there is a placard on the shroud that says Iskendrun racing cam??
I would love to stay stock but I need some good guru advice before I proceed.

A 912 will bolt in and a 914 will fit but you will have to convert to upright cooling. Type 1 VW engine will bolt up also but you will have to play with clutch and pp to get everything to mate properly.

Actually with a '59 I believe they were still 180mm so you may have some futzing to do with the clutch anyway since the 912s are 200mm.

I would find a (non-roller) crank and rods and rebuild the stock engine. Not the cheapest way to go but it is a '59 tub - it deserves a little lovin'. Cam and rods from Berardelli Racing, heads to Vic Skirmants and you are all set...
