View original topic: New Bearings too Loose????
ncapener@olypen.com Thu Jun 02, 2005 7:34 am

I ordered an got a new set of main bearings for the 2.1.
The new bearings seem to fit looser than the old ones. I tried two different crankshafts with the same result.
Do bearings get squished ore compressed once installed and the case gets torqued?
The old bearings show minimal wear and probably would be good for a long time. Should I use them instead of the new ones?

Help!!!!

NO, NO PLAY AT ALL !!!!!!!!!! Remanufactured blocks used cranks out of anything they had handy.1.9 or 2.1 reground to fit what ever block that day. You need to mic. the crank to see if it is std, 10, 20. When doing a build up everything fits perfectly. Read the bentley (all of it) to learn the ropes.

Bill,
I should have been more specific.
I dissasambled the engine from my syncro to take care of the low oil pressure. The previous owner had the pressure checked at a VW dealer and it was marginal.
I am using the original crank in the same case, no grinding or boring.
The rod bearings were bad, also the cam thrust bearing. Main bearings showed little wear and I would not hesitate to use them except I bought a new set already.
Yep, I got the Bentley
:)

whenever splitting the case replace all the bearings, crank, rods, cam. And the 2.1 sometimes needs new thrust washers. The specs are stamped on the old bearings.
